The 11th International Policy
Governance® Symposium

Governance:  Where in the
World is it Going?

December 10 - 12, 2009, Toronto Ontario Canada
Delta Chelsea Hotel

This Symposium is designed for practitioners who are committed to the
principles of Policy Governance, who have received advanced training, and who are helping boards to implement those principles.

You will be able to address and work through (in a small group setting) high level, advanced implementation issues in a safe, well-designed learning environment conducive to maximum participation and cooperation.

2009 Theme:  Governance:  Where in the
World is it Going?

To paraphrase Caroline Oliver at the IPGA annual conference in Montreal:  If the world needs board power as an expression of democracy and if Policy Governance is the only effective engine to achieve board power then a board using Policy Governance effectively is democracy in action. Why then is there continued resistance to Policy Governance and why is it not being more widely used?

The 2009 Symposium will consider these and other significant questions in a facilitated workshop. The session will explore:

  • The values, assumptions and expectations of a 21st century democratic society and how they align with Policy Governance as a theory;
  • The values, assumptions and expectations of PG in its implementation and how they align with a board – its constraints and its potential;
  • The values, assumptions and expectations of boards and board members in the continuing practice of PG and how their performance is helped or hindered by implementation approaches and practices, and by tools and resources;
  • The values, assumptions and expectations of consultants, coaches and mentors in the articulation, teaching and advising of boards and how their processes align with the performance needs of boards.
This year we will have one of the leading expect facilitators in the country, Joan McDonald, with us who will use a variety of group and individual and group activities and tools including:
  • Individual reflection;
  • The 6 sources of influence to changing behavior.
Other sessions at the symposium will include:
  • A review of current Policy Governance literature and other resources;
  • Stories of success;
  • Policy Governance in the small organization – challenges and solutions
